Cloud vs On-Premise, and taking care of the Company’s Data

Cloud and On-Premise. In the digital era, the possibilities to transform processes within companies are expanding. Cloud services are part of an irreversible trend. Nonetheless, organizations continue to prefer to keep certain sensitive services on-premise. Hence, the concept of hybrid systems is increasingly prevalent, that is, systems that combine the best of the cloud world with the value that the applications that are kept inside companies’ ecosystems continue to have.

This is happening in parallel to new work modalities that were imposed with the pandemic and that will also be modified as we move towards a “new normality”. Work became virtual. Companies had to not only learn quickly to manage their systems remotely, but also to establish new work strategies in relation to their staff.

The on-premise alternative is the IT infrastructure that is maintained within the organization and, in times of remote work, the one that is moved to the employees’ home environment.

The cloud option is the one that is materialized in servers mainly located in data centers outside the company, and that can either be public (arranged in systems where multiple clients share resources), or private (within spaces that belong only to one client). The intermediate alternative is the hybrid cloud where part of the information is hosted on shared servers and other part on their own systems.

The re-organization that the pandemic demanded, forced to rethink how systems operated in companies. The cloud was a valid alternative with rapid resolution, but specific decisions had to be made in relation to on-premises systems that, from being hosted in the company, became solutions installed in the employees’ homes. They became a sort of branch office for organizations and, as a result, it was necessary to ensure the reliability and security of the information circulating through this “new network” and impacting on companies’ systems. And this goal was achieved. The same attention, maintenance and updating that the on-premise solution demanded in the company, was transferred to the users’ homes where the remote work was carried out.

In a world where everything was happening almost a 100% virtually, but with dispersed systems in different modes of use, what had to be taken into account? There were many moments in which the IT responsible had to consider how to solve the daily operations: Should it be done 100% cloud or 100% on premise?

The answer was simple: it was necessary to continue with a hybrid scheme. That is to say, some systems should work well on the cloud and others on premise, though that implied thinking in a more distributed architecture.

What became clear due to the pandemic was that not only both worlds, the cloud and local installations, could continue to coexist without difficulty, but also that the on-premise also applied to home office.

Although the expectation is that, at some point, the pandemic will have been overcome, there is a certainty that has to do with the introduction of hybrid models for everything, both from the company side and from the consumer side. The operation of an organization is already a hybrid model, as well as the daily exercise of buying, working, studying, providing post-sale services, meetings, etc.

This double side of hybridity in the way companies operate, and in the ways that everyday tasks take on, inevitably impact data management and the security and reliability of this data.

A data management software that is installed on users’ computers, such as Conciliac EDM, enables the diversity of data that is generated in different areas of the company to be consolidated, cleaned up and reconciled in the company’s facilities, without depend necessarily on the cloud to process it.

Conciliac supports the development of this hybrid ecosystem in two senses. On the one hand, as an on-premise tool, it can be installed on a cloud server for each client. And on the other hand, in its evolution roadmap are the milestones of offering in a cloud and mobile way some specific functionalities of the platform, consolidating itself as a hybrid distributed data management system.

Ultimately, the dichotomy cloud vs. on-premise loses relevance when the focus is on the priority to ensure that the management of sensitive data is secure, effective, scalable and automatable.
